Retention Unit

The Retention Unit is a component of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Advising. The unit, open from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, offers assistance which aids in the retention of students as they matriculate and encourages them to maintain passing grades and acceptable grade point averages, thus assuring that they will graduate from Albany State University. Students may visit the center for assistance with preparation for GACE Tests, the Regents’ Test, GRE, MAT, GMAT, NET, TEAS and other standardized tests for various disciplines.

Additionally, the Retention Center offers services such as Supplemental Instruction. This service consists of “after-hour classes” designed to assist students enrolled in traditionally difficult academic courses. Facilitators for the SI classes are the professors of the so-called “killer” courses. The professors review and enhance the students’ knowledge of the course content.

Yet another offering of the Retention Center is a variety of workshops designed to provide students with strategies and information which will enhance learning skills. Typical topics include those involving note-taking, reading college textbooks, preparing for mid-terms and finals, improving study habits, managing time, studying the sciences, minimizing test anxiety and using the graphing calculator. Other types of workshops include On-the-go workshops conducted in the foyers of academic buildings or the student union as well as several Pathway to Graduate School seminars for seniors preparing to graduate from ASU. Students and faculty may also request specific workshops.

For more information regarding these services, please call (229) 420-1199 or email monica.whitley@asurams.edu.
