Prospective Students

Students who have been out of high school at least five years or whose high school class graduated at least five years ago, and hold a high school diploma from a regionally accredited high school, or satisfactorily completed the GED, and have earned fewer than 30 transferable semester credit hours are not required to take the SAT or ACT; however, these students must take the College Placement Examination and complete any Developmental Studies/Learning Support requirements. A student must meet the following minimum requirements under the new phase-in admission criteria:

Admissions Requirements

All Prospective Freshmen interested in attending Albany State University must meet the following requirements to be considered for admissions to Albany State University.

Minimum Freshman Admission Requirements:

  • SAT I Critical Reading 430
  • SAT - Math 400
  • High School GPA 2.22
  • ACT - English 17
  • ACT - Math 17
  • Applicants must meet the University System of Georgia's College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) requirements for acceptance.

Submission Process

This applies to any student who has never been admitted to a degree program at Albany State University or any other post-secondary institution of higher education.

Application Procedures

Evaluation of an applicant's qualifications for admission can only begin once Albany State University Admissions Office has received all supporting documents. Academic requirements, as well as, test requirements must be met before admission to the University can be granted.

We consider the applicant's secondary school academic record and standardized college entrance exams (SAT or ACT). For admission consideration, an applicant should have a well-balanced college preparatory program that includes the following course work:

  • 4 units English
  • 4 units Mathematics 
  • 3 units Social science 
  • 3 units Science  
  • 2 units Foreign Language

Complete application package includes:

  • Completed, signed, and dated application for admission
  • Official high school transcript that shows your cumulative grade point average 
  • Standardized test scores

Early Action

Deadline: November 1

Applicants who submit complete application packages by November 1 will receive notification of their admission decision by late December.

Early Admissions

The Early Admissions Program offers the academically superior high school senior an opportunity for admission as a beginning freshman after his/her junior year of high school. The following procedures are required:

  • Complete an application for admission.
  • Request high school principal or counselor to submit a transcript and recommendation for the program. Applicant must have an average of 3.0 (B) or better in academic subjects.
  • Have SAT scores or the comparable ACT Assessment Program scores. A minimum SAT composite score of 970 or composite ACT score of 21.
  • Submit a statement of approval from parents

Advanced Placement for Freshmen

Albany State University grants advanced placement with credit for beginning freshmen who have achieved a score of three or higher on Advanced Placement Tests. Three semester hours of credit may be given in one or more areas in which the tests are administered.

Joint Enrollment Program/Post Secondary Option (PSO)


The Joint Enrollment Program at Albany State University offers academically superior high school juniors or seniors an opportunity to enroll for college credit prior to the completion of their high school program of study provided they reside in close proximity to permit class attendance at the University and his/her high school during the same period of time. Students entering through the joint enrollment program must have completed the University System of Georgia College Preparatory Curriculum requirements with the following exceptions: Students with SAT verbal scores of at least 530 or ACT English scores of at least 24 who have not completed the final unit of high school English and/or social science may be permitted to fulfill these high school requirements with the appropriate college courses taken through the joint enrollment program. Students who have not completed the College Preparatory Curriculum requirements may be admitted through the joint enrollment program if they are enrolled in the necessary high school courses and scheduled to complete the requirements by the end of their senior year. Students enrolled in public secondary institutions may be eligible for tuition reimbursement under the Post Secondary Option (PSO) program and should contact their high school counselor for information. Procedures for applying for enrollment in the Joint Enrollment Program are:

  • Complete an official application form.
  • Have SAT scores or the comparable ACT Assessment Program scores mailed to the Office of Admissions. A minimum SAT composite score of 970, with at least 430 minimum on verbal and at least 400 minimum on math, or a minimum ACT composite score of 21, with at least 18 minimum on verbal and at least 16 minimum on math. 
  • Submit a completed joint enrollment application and advisement form.
