Welcome to the Department of English, Modern Languages, & Mass Communication

Take a moment and imagine a person (for the purposes of imagination, it does not matter whether the person is a man or a woman). Imagine that this person intuitively discovers all of the secrets of the universe, but has no language to communicate those secrets to others. While that person is brilliant by his or her subjective standard, and would be considered brilliant if only she or he could communicate, that person would represent the greatest loss to humanity of all time.

The faculty and staff of the department of English, Modern Languages, and Mass Communication is dedicated to helping Albany State University students master language, and by mastering language to help students to communicate their ideas and discoveries.

Whether you only join us for the Core Curriculum courses in English and Modern Languages, or whether you are willing to take the challenge of pursuing one of our majors, we welcome you. Together we can insure that your thoughts and discoveries will not be lost but will become a part of the great human record.

Mission Statement
In accordance with the mission of Albany State University, the Department of English, Modern Languages, and Mass Communication strives to create an intellectually engaging and supportive environment to educate students as contributors to society. The department offers Bachelor's degrees in English, Spanish, and Mass Communication, which prepare students for graduate or professional study and for careers in their fields of interest. Each program fosters a commitment to excellence in learning through quality instruction informed by the faculty's dedication to pedagogy and its engagement in creative activity, scholarship, and research. The courses of study prepare students for success in a diverse, technological, and increasingly global society through a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and professional activities such as practicum, internships, cooperative education, and study abroad programs.

The department serves the larger university community by teaching core curriculum courses, which stress reading, writing, and critical thinking skills that will contribute to all students' achievement in their fields of major concentration and in all aspects of their lives
